About Us
We are a climate innovation and modelling venture committed to addressing the complex challenges of climate change through science-based solutions that centre the needs of both communities and decision-makers.
Our approach is rooted in partnership—with people, places, and policy. We source our research questions, data inputs, and insights directly from the ground, co-developing solutions with communities in the equinoctial, tropic regions. With deep expertise in energy, water, land, and climate systems, the EQUINOCT team brings decades of experience in research, technology, and participatory fieldwork. Our core team includes PhD-level experts and professionals from premier institutions, with a strong track record of collaboration across government (NDMA, LBSNAA, BPCL), private (CIAL, FES, SEEM, PSE), and academic/research sectors (IIT Bombay, TISS, NIT Calicut, Amrita University, KAU, NIE).
Our data-driven work aligns with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, emphasizing the need for a multidimensional understanding of risk—spanning vulnerability, exposure, and hazards.
At its core, EQUINOCT stands for:
Enhancing the Quality of life through Innovation and Networking, Offsetting Climate change impacts using appropriate Technology in the tropics.
Our Story
Born from Urgency, Built on Collaboration
EQUINOCT was born out of a shared sense of urgency and a deep belief in the power of community.
The journey began in the aftermath of the catastrophic Kerala floods of 2018, during a national study titled Kerala Floods 2018: Causes and Risk Mitigation Strategy. Commissioned by the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) and supported by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Government of India, the study was led by Dr. C.G. Madhusoodhanan as Principal Investigator and Dr. Sreeja K.G. as Co-Investigator.
As the team investigated the drivers of the disaster—climate variability, land-use change, and institutional gaps—informal discussions began to unfold among the study authors and Dr. Jayaraman Chillayil. These conversations circled around a pressing idea: What if communities were not just passive recipients of disaster relief, but active participants in shaping the responses?

From Insight to Innovation
From Insight to Innovation
The recurrence of extreme floods in 2019, followed by the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, only intensified the concern. Together, these crises underscored the need for a paradigm shift. The world was clearly changing, and it demanded a fresh approach to climate and disaster resilience—one that integrated science and data with grounded, community-led knowledge.
It was in this moment that a new idea took root: Community Sourced Modelling Solutions.
At this turning point, Madhusoodhanan and Jayaraman came together with complementary experience across grassroots action, policy, and systems thinking. Their shared conviction that communities must be at the center of any sustainable solution led to the founding of EQUINOCT.
A Transformative Approach
A Transformative Approach
EQUINOCT reimagines how we confront the challenges of a warming world. By integrating local insight with scientific tools, we co-create models that not only forecast risks but build agency. Our work places communities at the core of climate resilience and disaster preparedness.
Because true resilience begins when data meets lived experience and solutions are built from the ground up.

Our Mission
Our Mission
Climate change is jeopardising millions of lives and livelihoods, shrinking safe and liveable spaces and creating climate refugees across the planet.
EQUINOCT aims to provide science-based solutions and support to communities and decision-makers in addressing the multiple challenges of climate change.
