A community-driven initiative in Kerala’s Vembanad wetland that combines local knowledge, ecosystem restoration, and technology to build resilience against climate-induced high-tide flooding.
We are co-creating a strong, multi-stakeholder resilience strategy across 25 coastal LSGs in coastal Ernakulam which lies in the southern Vembanad region. It started with building a community flood monitoring network at Puthenvelikkara, an AEIF-supported awareness and advocacy campaign, exploration of resilient building technologies and is ongoing with co-creation of community micro-action plan for high tide flood resilience and mitigation in the Ezhikkara panchayat. We have produced high-resolution tidal maps, developed the SeaSight dashboard for real-time monitoring and decision support and is piloting the Resilient Ezhikkara micro-action plan with local government partnership.
Through Conference of Panchayats Ernakulam events, special Gramasabhas, drone mapping, and creative advocacy such as the People and Stories From the Brink docu-short screened at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale and COP 28, Chevittorma community theatre that was selected for the International Theatre Festival of India, KaBhumM!!! exhibition that is bringing together nearly 25 artists, we are combining community-led action, ecosystem restoration, and science-based tools to advance climate-resilient, locally grounded solutions for high-tide flooding.
